the story of squeak

Seventeen years ago (wow I feel super old right now) I kept a journal. I found it recently and it is full of ridiculousness and things I barely remember. Today, I thought it would be fun to share with you the story about Squeak, the pet bunny I had for about 1.5 days....

 April 25, 1995

"Yesterday when I got home from school, my mom and brother were sitting on the floor in the living room with a cat carrier in front of them. They told me to look inside. So I did and there was a tiny baby bunny sitting in a corner. My mom told me that my cat Mittens had it in his mouth. But luckily he has no teeth. {side note: my cat had to have all of his teeth removed because they were in terrible condition. he was fine though, his gums were hardened so he could eat stuff}.  She said we could keep it and we named it Squeak because he squeaks when  you pick him up. He is a mixture of all of these types of bunnies: Lop-eared, Dwarf, Cotton Tail and Jack. he is only 7cm long.  We had to make him a leash because you can't buy one that small. We take him outside after school every day. Yesterday I took him to the IGA {drugstore} with my mom.  Everyone stopped to look at him. He won't eat much yet but I'm sure he will. I will probably bring him to school on Monday. We keep him in a cat carrier. We are going to get him a cage and a water bottle. We have been feeding him with a baby bottle. He goes to sleep on me every night. I love him."

"Yesterday after school I walked in my front door and asked my mom where Squeak was. She said that he wasn't there. I asked if she let him go. She said "no." I asked if she gave him away. She said that there was no one to give away. I said what do you mean? She told me that Squeak died. I started to cry. Then I said, "No, he's not dead just sleeping." I ran downstairs to see him. he was all wrapped up in a towel in a box.  I opened it up. He lay there stiff as a rock. I cried even harder. My dad told me that it was because he was so young and he needed his mother. I really loved him though. After a while my dad and I went outside to bury him. My mom told me to just think of the happy things that we did together. I told her that just makes me sadder. I don't think I can forget him. I hope I can't. He was the best pet I ever had even though he didn't last very long. I really miss him. At school I even made him a name tag. Now no one's Squeak. One day I hope another Squeak will come."

*tear* Sad story, no? I didn't mean to bring you down! I actually thought it was pretty funny considering I fell so deeply in love with this little bunny over the course of about two hours and talked about it as if we had all of these amazing times together.  My cats were notorious for bring me new "pets"... bunnies, moles, birds... I would have kept anything they delivered to our back door.

What was the best pet you ever had?

  2. Adorable! I had a pet fish I named venus because of his blue color. I had him exactly two weeks before my mom killed him. She was cleaning his bowl and poured out the water forgetting to remove him and down the drain he went. I cried for days after that.

  3. Ahh so cute lol when my brother and I as small we lived on the lake and we buried our dead bird and then later tried to dig it up (not sure why lol) and it was not there we were certain it went to heaven LOL

  4. Aww no that did make me cry a little. I've lost so many animals, one recently too, so that all came back! My fault for reading, I guess.

Such a sweet story though, at least it had a lot of love in the end of its depressingly short life, but that's the way it goes. But, he knew what a cuddle felt like, which a lot of wild bunnies don't! ♥

  5. This is sort of weird but the story made me smile...because the exact same thing happened to me! My dad found three abandoned baby bunnies in our garden. We tried to care for them, following vets orders, but they didn't survive. Wow, now that I think about it I remember the experience pretty vividly! I bet if I had my journal still I would have entries about them as well. xo JA

  6. I've been an animal rescuer since I was wee bitty, so I've got a ton of stories like this one. BUT, the very best one was of a cat that became my sweetest friend for the better part of 15 years! I was about 5 years old, and playing in our barn (we lived in the sticks in those days) when I heard little kitten mews coming from somewhere. I dug around for (what felt like) hours until I found her - tiny, calico, and starving. She was only a few weeks old and I loved her immediately. I brought her inside, and my mother was a total sucker for her too. We nursed her back to health, got her strong, and kept her! In an original stroke of naming genius, I called her Kitty. She stayed with me until I was a freshman in college. She died while I was away at school, and I'll never forgive myself for not being there for her.

But that's my sweet story of my very first rescue.

As always, excellent blog. One that really made me smile and sniffle a little!

  8. Aw, you were such a sweetie :) I'm so glad I never kept a journal (at least not consistently) because I'm sure it would be full of all sorts of drama and embarrassing things.
We had so many pets when I was growing up, but I absolutely love the puggle my hubs and I adopted before we got married. He's such a snuggler and he has the funniest personality. Pets are the best little friends :)

  9. I am unsure if its because I too had a baby bunny that died but I instantly teared up at that... Poor squeak. Our bunny was named Cassidy.. Thanks for sharing your diary with us. That is something I don't think I could do..

  12. My horse, Goldie, was my favorite pet. He had a little white diamond on his nose. He was one of the biggest horses at the barn, and was so gentle. We shared the same birthday, so he would've turned 13 with me today, if he was still here. My mom asked the owner of the barn to turn him out, which she did. Goldie had taken a running start towards the fence and missed the jump, running into it with his shoulder. The vet came and said they would have to put him down, which made me and my mom cry until my eyes couldn't open. I'll always remember Goldie and his amazing personality. :)

  13. Love this. I love reading all diary entries...they make me giggle. We were so dramatic back then! I would have been heartbroken though over a cutie like Squeak. I probably would have pouted for a week...

  15. How sad! :(

However, Squeak sounded like a good little pet and I felt so bad for you! I have had a few similar experiences with a few of my previous unlucky pets.

  16. I feel like crying and laughing at the same time! What a terrible and amusing story all at once.. We had a fish once and thought it died so we took it outside to bury it and as we stood around the burial site the ground started to move... he wasn't dead after all?! so we rushed him back inside! Needless to say, next time we were more careful!
I'd forgotten all about that until I read your post so thank you for that! :)
