what i've been using lately: Extra Virgin Minerals
On a recent hunt for a liquid mineral foundation, I came across these little guys from The Body Shop. First of all, I wasn't even sure it was possible to find a liquid mineral foundation since usually the point of a mineral makeup is to have it in powder form. I was curious, so I Googled "liquid mineral foundation" and the first thing that popped up was this Body Shop stuff. I know, I know, I'm a lazy product hunter!
I'm always hesitant to try ANY new makeup product because my skin likes to try to combat it immediately. I usually stick with my Everyday Minerals powder base and that's that... however, I wanted to find something to give me a little extra coverage.
I read all of the reviews on the site and everybody seemed to be raving about this stuff. To make things even better, they had a BOGO sale on all makeup that very same day. Buy one, get one free. So I did.
I grabbed this Extra Virgin Minerals liquid foundation first, then stuck the Compact foundation in my cart as well, thinking that a liquid mineral foundation in a compact was an interesting idea. When my products arrived, I was excited to try them out.
First impression, I wasn't really liking these products. The blatantly obvious colour difference between the two (though I had ordered the exact same shade in both) kind of put me off. The swatch on the left is the liquid one, the one on the right is the compact.
The compact shade definitely seemed more natural and really does match my skin tone perfectly. Please excuse my ugly cold looking hand in the above photo. Both of these were the lightest shade available. I'm not really sure how the liquid one can claim itself to be "natural ivory" when it looks more like a bad tan.
So, first impression wasn't good. After trying these on my face, I still wasn't sure that I was in love with them. They definitely took some getting used to and trial-and-error. They have olive oil in them as a base, so I found that they were quite oily, especially for a "mineral" foundation. HOWEVER, after perfecting my application techniques, I absolutely love this stuff. The compact much more so.
I apply it with my fingers because I do not like the stiff application brush it comes with. Using my finger, I dab under my eyes and on any darker spots that need covering up. It goes on really smooth and creamy. I've also become accustomed to putting it on my eyelids and brow bones as a base before eyeshadow. The trick, I found, is to "set" the creamy foundation with a powder to prevent creasing and moving about. I still use my Everyday Minerals matte base on top of this and it seals everything in and makes my skin look flawless!
So, there you have it. I would absolutely recommend the compact version of this liquid mineral foundation if you use a powder to seal it. It really does make the perfect concealer for those dark spots or bumps... and you can rest easy knowing that it doesn't contain harsh chemicals, which is a must for sensitive skin!
Are you a fan of mineral makeup? What do you use for your foundation/concealer?

I've never heard of liquid mineral foundation either. I've been using estee lauder double wear for the past few years, and am hesitant to try something new. Although, the compact does sound convenient. Is it more like a cream than a liquid? That does sound annoying that the colors are different though. I wouldn't know which to get for me skin tone.

It is definitely more of a cream! I guess that's how it stays compact haha. I found that people in the reviews on their site were saying the shades were darker than they thought, so I'd recommend going with something lighter maybe.
Deletejane iredale has a all natural mineral foundation thats liquid & pressed powders too. They have super fair options too. just a tad expensive (i have been not using it because of the price) but its my fav foundation for sure
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check that one out! xo
DeleteI've never even looked at The Body Shops' make up range, despite being an avid fan of their other products, so I'll have to give them a good browse next time. I like the sound of the mineral powder, liquid foundations tend to melt off my face when I'm running around doing stuff. You mentioned that they're a little oily but are they fairly light? Never like caking my face with heavy foundation lol xoxo
ReplyDeleteI seriously never buy Body Shop products so I had no idea what to expect. I think the compact one is supposed to go on creamy then dry to a more powder finish, but i find it not very powdery. They are a bit oily, but it's just olive oil so it's great for your skin. It is lightweight I find. definitely no caking if you apply it properly!
DeleteI've never used mineral make up and I don't often change either as my skin can be reactive. I've been fairly happy with my StudioFix from MAC and their concealer as well. They used to have a foundation stick that I loved but alas, it was discontinued.
ReplyDeleteLovely blog! I really like the mineral powders when I use them I have a feeling that my skin breathe :)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Poland:)
Ahh, I've definitely heard of these but I've never had a chance to try them. I think I'll try out the compact version and see how it works! Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of mineral stuff, but only in the winter, my skin is dry.. Your blog is really great babe, I have to take more than 10 minutes to read it!!

I used to use this make up too :) your definitely right the creamy compact version is better. I loved it at first and used it for about a month however I started to notice that throughout the day if I touched my face even slightly then it would leave a very obvious streak and really didn't look good. I found myself having to use more and more mineral powder over the top to set it as you said you do yourself. In the end I gave up but it disappoints me as I really did love it at first. I suppose it works differently on individual skin types though.
ReplyDeleteI definitely noticed this too, moreso on my oily areas. Maybe for someone with oilier skin it wouldn't be the best, since it's full of olive oil as well. I did find the powder to combat this though but I do use the compact sparingly too.
Deletexo!
I am an avid user of body shop products! I will have to try out the compact for sure :)
ReplyDeleteI love mineral foundation and at the moment I use nude by nature but have been meaning to switch to a compact mineral foundation just because a powder foundation can be so messy!
ReplyDeleteWill try this, thank you : )

ReplyDeleteLove all your make-up posts!
ReplyDeleteMineral Make-up is all I use - although I wear a handmade all-natural mineral make-up label 'Ragged Blossom Beauty'. One thing I have found when using the mineral powders (in both the commercial & the handmade labels) is that they give better coverage & apply better if you use a slightly dampened brush :-) ...I don't know if this applies for the non-mineral brands as I've never used them.
I used to wear the Body Shop Make Up but found the tones didn't match my skin very well & there was colour differences within the same product (my blush & a friends in the same tone differed a fair amount!)
I'm so glad I read this! I need to go to the mall today to pick up some new makeup and I was going to go with my standard bare minerals but I'm kind of itching to try something new
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of mineral makeup! I started using it a few years ago when I bought Bare Minerals for my mom. I've switched to using an Arbonne version my mother-in-law gave me a couple years back, and I've never looked back! The Arbonne stuff goes on so smooth and it has some light reflecting bits, so you get a nice glow from it.
ReplyDeleteGlad you found a liquid mineral foundation you like! I didn't even know they made liquid form :)
i used to be a really huge fan of MAC make up but recently tried Bare Minerals make up. I was really hesitant at first because i thought it would have terrible coverage yet i was pleasantly surprised. its so much lighter on the skin as well. i'll be sure to try out the Body Shops collection!

I haven't tried any mineral makeup before. I was about to say that sounds great a liquid mineral makeup but then you said olive oil and said it was pretty oily. Since I have oily skin I do not think it would be a great fit me.
ReplyDeleteIf you have oily skin, I HIGHLY recommend a mineral foundation in powder form. This one might not be good for you, but my go-to base mineral foundation is an Everyday Minerals base which is amazing. I still use this in conjunction with the liquid one, but it's amazing on it's own as well.
DeleteI use the compact, I think it's lovely but not keen on the brush that came with it, I don't know about yours but it makes mine go on all streaky. With a good brush though I love this product. Haven't tried the liquid one.
ReplyDeleteBody shop eye liner is also really good x
It looks really good :) I love body shop products :) xxx
