a bag of secrets

sweater: c/o OASAP; bag: c/o Jo Totes; shorts: True Religion; socks: American Apparel

What every woman needs is a good handbag. Even better? A handbag that is actually a camera bag. Which is exactly why I immediately fell in love with Jo Totes: camera bags for ladies. They have these removable/interchangeable foam padding pieces that secure with velcro, so you can change up the inside however you need to. Perfection! This baby is coming everywhere with me.

I've decided that I'm going to try to "up" my photography game. Sometimes I can put all of my attention into taking photos that (I think) turn out pretty good, while other times I think I just get lazy and don't try my absolute best. I want to change that, so mr. camera and I are going to be getting to know each other all over again and hopefully make some magic together. After considering saving up for a brand spankin' new camera, I learned some valuable advice:  the camera doesn't take better photos, the photographer does. You could have the most expensive, top of the line contraption, but it all comes down to whether or not you truly know how to use it to your benefit. I guess that can also be reversed in saying that you don't have to have the most expensive camera to take stunning photos. If you know how light and composition works that's already half the battle. Which is why I'm going to be sticking to my trusty old Canon Rebel XT to see what I can do with the thing. I also really want to scout out some cool locations in my neighborhood, so the next time I have a free afternoon I'll make an adventure of it.

What kind of camera do you own?

  1. i recently just invested in a new dslr a nikon d5100 after my "bridge" camera broke and cost far more than it's worth to repair.
I agree that it isn't the camera, but the photographer that takes the good photos. Fancy cameras are such a nice thing to have but if you've already got one then I don't think you need a new one.
    Sorry about the long comment!
    lots of love

  2. I really like that outfit! And I'm the same way, unless I'm desperate to take a photo quickly, I am resisting the urge to use the Automatic setting on my slr. Manual all the way, and I actually like it better!

  4. amen to that! I hate when people say to me "your camera takes such good pictures!" It's a little insulting. I have spent a lot of time with my camera - practicing, reading books and tutorials, etc. I didn't just take it out the box and boom - great photos. My photos have improved so much in the past few years and even more so in the six months since I have had a dslr and that is because of all the time I have put in :).

  5. These bags are such a great idea (and I love your jumper!) I use a Panasonic FZ150 bridge camera and I'm really pleased to read this post. Every time I see a canon I wish I'd bought one but I just need to learn to use what I have properly I think!

  6. That's true about it's all about the person taking it, but sometimes, having better lens makes pictures look better. :) I own a Canon, well actually, my boyfriend owns it ;)

    1. True that a lens gives you a certain effect you want!
I use a 50mm usually. If you don't know how to use it though a lens isn't much use haha.

  9. Hi! Just started following your lovely blog today. :) My camera is a Canon Rebel T3. I also have an XT. I LOVE my T3, though. It's light, easy to use, and helps me take beautiful photos.

Your blog is beautiful and inspirational. Keep up the great work. :)

  10. Holy crap! I think I just found my new purse/camera bag. One of the reasons I never bring my camera with me anywhere is because I don't want to drag around another bag for it... and let's just say, the camera bag that my ex-husband bought wasn't exactly girly or fashionable... SO want one of these Jo Totes.

Oh yeah, I have a Canon Rebel XTI.

  13. I currently own a Canon t3i and a Vivitar V3800n 35mm film camera...all of my lenses, accessories, batteries, etc are crammed into this not so sightly camera bag and I hate lugging it around. I will definitely be saving up for a more "girl-friendly" camera bag like yours! So adorable!

  18. I bought a Canon 60D recently and damn, I should have waited for this post before buying a not-so-feminine camera bag. Totally bookmarking their website for future reference. Thanks for letting us know that such cute camera bags exist!
