Just do you.

If there's something I've learned over the years, it's that worrying about making anybody happy but yourself is a waste of energy. If making somebody else happy, or even changing who you are to please that person is not something that will make you happy, then screw it. It's not your job to make sure that everyone is satisfied if it's not going to satisfy you in the end.  Sometimes, the only way others are happy with themselves is if they share their dissatisfaction and assume that you owe them something in return. You don't owe them anything. It's not up to you to make sure that their level of confidence in themselves is brought up to par. Just do you, and if somebody tries to knock you down for that... screw 'em!

Now onto the rest of this post. I got this jacket and hat from Tailor & Stylist and thought I would channel my inner Sherlock Holmes today. Here's what I came up with. Hope you like the pics! (and if not, screw you! haha <3). Have a great weekend, friends!

  12. That's a philosophy I need to adopt. Sometimes I get so fixated on pleasing everyone else that it has a paralyzing effect.

  17. Very good advice, but something that is only too easy to forget, unfortunately.

Kind of makes me wonder—if there is a hidden influence behind people's posts, statuses, updates, etc. If their motivation to say a thing is related to trying to fit into some other persona. I know when I do it, it is because sometimes I am scared of an honest reaction to my true personality. And that is as "me" as it gets! haha

    1. The only way this would be selfish is if you took it out of context and don't get what I'm saying.
And even if it was selfish, there's nothing wrong with writing somebody off who will only bring you down. I don't think that's selfish at all... More like better for your well being ;)

  24. Absolutely love this post. Life is too short to be unhappy. We need to stand up for ourselves and do the things that we want to do.

  25. You definitely make an interesting point. I definitely agree that you shouldn't change yourself to make others happy. The other points you made definitely made me think. I'm going through a bit of a dilemma relating to that as I type this, and it's weird that I just came across this post. Hmmm...

Also: I adore your blog layout. I'm a fairly new reader just getting back into blogging, and as an art student I really appreciate your design skills and your personal style really matches mine! Wow. :D

  31. I think it was you that brought me to Romwe. I love their sweaters! They look so warm and comfortable. And it looks like you're getting a lot of use from that backdrop set-up that Dustin got you for Christmas. That has got to be a lot easier, a lot more fun (and a lot warmer) than trekking outside all the time. :)

I have to admit, unfortunately, that I've put far too much of my own faith in the opinions of others. I think it is because I was "that student" in high school--the one everyone cornered and threw spitballs at and made rumors about. I still have no idea why. I'm not sure I will ever understand. It took a long-term toll on my confidence and self-esteem and, currently, my fiance is working with me to build it. He keeps trying to convince me that their opinions then don't matter now. We were all young, then, so why hang on to those negative feelings seven years later?

  32. Wow I completely agree with you Dana! For a long time I was so worried about what others thought and wanted to please everyone, that I forgot who I was. Once I was living on my own I started to figure out who I was and felt comfortable in my own skin, that was taken as rebellion through my parents's eyes. Now because of that I almost started to go backwards in a way and almost started to change myself again so that I could please my parents, but thanks to my wonderful husband he did not let me do that to myself.

I am now so happy with myself and have my own style :) I only worry about making me and my husband happy and everyone else can just deal with their own unhappiness when it comes to me.

Thank you for this amazing post!
