Festival Survival: How To Take On Summer Festivals Like A Boss

This post was sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Inc.

With the summer festival season already in full swing, you might be considering attending a few over the next couple of months. As someone who used to live for music fests, I’ve picked up a few tips along the way and wanted to be sure to share them so that you can have the best experience!

Festivals are all about embracing the moment and letting loose. You don’t want to have to worry about wardrobe malfunctions or sore feet, so here are a few things to consider:

Practicality vs. Style

I’ve made the mistake in the past of getting all dolled up, from my hair down to my shoes, and quickly realized that it wasn’t the smartest idea when the heat kicked in and it started pouring rain for hours. Festival fashion is all about comfort and being practical. You really don’t want to be wearing a strapless bandeau if you’re going to be jumping around all day, just as you don’t want to be fixing your clothing every 5 minutes. Stay basic with some clothing that allows you to move freely, and leave the layers of jewelry and accessories at home. If it can’t stay put, don’t put it on!

Staying hydrated is so important at these events. Bring a refillable water bottle or one of those wearable hydration backpacks. Many festivals have free water refill stations, so you don’t have to waste your money on over priced bottles of new water.

Pack the Essentials

Taking a small bag or backpack is the way to go. Something that can be attached to you at all times is the best option if you are going to partake in any dancing.

The contents you pack can really make or break your experience. Be sure to include essentials like your ID, cash and sunscreen, as well as any small items to help make your venture more comfortable like waterproof bandages, hair ties, aspirin, itch relief, any needed feminine products, and blister treatment to make sure that you bring home memories instead of sore feet!  Some easy snacks like granola bars can help keep your energy up throughout the day, too. Tip: a backup battery pack for your phone or a separate charged camera will save your battery life if you plan on snapping photos all day!

If your event is an outdoor overnight experience, you’ll also want to bring some extra cash for showers, makeup removing wipes to help battle any breakouts from sweat and dirt, travel sized dry shampoo, and breath strips to ensure your mouth stays its freshest.

Plan Your Lineup

Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to catch every single act at these events, so check the official website beforehand and plan which artists you want to see. Make note of their set times in your phone so you don’t miss your faves!

Be Weather Prepared

You can’t predict the weather, unfortunately, and it really, really sucks getting drenched all day long. Pack a full length waterproof poncho and bring a resealable plastic baggie to protect your cash, phone, and anything that you definitely don’t want to get wet! If you know ahead of time that it’s going to rain, try wearing rubber boots instead of canvas shoes… because we all know how annoying soaking wet canvas shoes can feel.

Be Safe

Know where your friends are at all times, and if you’re splitting up, be sure to schedule times and places to meet. Most people are friendly at festivals, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use caution. Don’t accept drinks or food from people you don’t know and always be aware of your surroundings. If you don’t feel comfortable in a situation, leave. You can always ask a security guard for help if you need to.

Enjoy The Experience

Finally, what is a festival if you aren’t enjoying every minute of it!? Some of my best memories have been made at music festivals, so live it up while you’re young! I think that everyone should experience at least one festival in their lifetime. Be free, and leave your worries at home for the day.
